Music video analysis, Thank u next

Thank you, next- Ariana Grande

This music video begins with the camera filming separate people in an american high school relaying gossip that is said about Ariana Grande within the school, which is a reference to the rumours that are spread about her throughout the media. The mise-en-scene features actors dressed as high school students alongside backgrounds such as sports areas and corridors, which help set the scene. Furthermore, this is an intertextual reference to the 2004 film 'Mean girls', where students spread gossip about Regina George, who they were in awe of.

The video features actors that featured in the film such as Jonathan Bennett, and celebrities like Troye Sivan and Colleen Ballinger. Ariana Grande has referenced this iconic film because she is expected to be featured in a high quality music video as she is considered an icon by many. In this scene there is a reference to Ariana's short lived romance with Pete Davidson, where she breaks off an engagement.

Then we cut to a close up of the artist, which is a prominent feature of music videos. Again, this is an intertextual reference to Mean Girls, as the mise-en-scene shows Ariana in a teenage girls bedroom with pyjamas on, like Regina George once did. The fact that Ariana is wearing revealing/little clothing, as another key aspect of music videos, as women are often sexualised to appeal to the male gaze. The audience would immediately see the similarities as she has blond hair, and is writing in the burn book- this was a book in the film that Regina and her clique would write horrible comments in about girls in their school. Instead, Ariana is writing comments about the men she has previously dated, which creates an idea that this video is a dig at her past boyfriends, whilst channelling female empowerment. In addition to this, the artist is looking directly at us, which gives the impression that we are seeing something that we shouldn't.
