Sixties Timeline

1959-1971

1959- Women in Nepal are allowed to vote, whereas the Swiss people vote against allowing women to vote. This change is the result of British woman fighting for their vote.

1960- Many lower class people started to move up through the class systems by going to university and getting jobs that middle class people would get.

1961- The contraceptive pill is introduced, but is available for married women only. It suppresses women's fertility by using the hormones oestrogen or progestogen, or both. The flaw was that single women were getting their married friends to purchase it for them. It was women's sexual liberation.

1962- Marilyn Munroe died, a hollywood star and an icon to most women, particularly because she was a size 12/14.

1963- George Best, a famous footballer for Manchester United started to influence the public, particularly men, in regards to fashion sense and hairstyles. Many celebrities started to be used in advertising campaigns to influence the public.

1964- The married women's property act was revised and it was decided that women were allowed to keep half of any money they'd saved from the allowance paid to them by their husbands, giving them some financial independence. However, this highlighted that many women were still financially dependant on their husbands income. The 1870 act allowed women to be legal owners of the money they earned and inherit property.

1965- The Beatles became really popular in the 60's, as the first boyband, allowing women to express themselves.

1966- There was many jobs available during the 60's, so the government allowed people from the commonwealth countries come to Britain to take some of the jobs, where they immigrated and settled in industrial areas.

1967- The women's abortion act was made legal for women up to 24 weeks pregnant. The abortion was only carried out after to consenting doctors agreed there was valid reason, for example, the mother's or child's physical or mental health being affected. Furthermore, the contraceptive pill was made available for single women as well.

1968- During this time 850 women went on strike in Dagenham AT Ford for equal pay, which eventually they recieved. Their work was considered to be unskilled which is why they didn't receive equal pay in the firstly. Also, Barbara Castle was elected to be the first female secretary of state.

1969- At 21, Bernadette Devlin, an Irish socialist and republican became the youngest member of British parliament. This highlights how women of all ages were being taken seriously in politics.

1970- A strike was carried out by women's clothing workers in Leeds because of discrimination against women by the union after they accepted a low wage rise. The Miss World contest held in Britain was protested against by some women as they argued it objectified women.
