Statement of Aims

Statement of aims- media coursework How and why I will use media language: Media language includes colours used, lighting, angles, mise en scene, shots, images, people used. Mise en scene includes make up and fashion, so I will style Neve to appeal to a middle aged audience, e.g more covered and with natural make up and pastel colours. I want to use mostly bright light to portray clear images with a range of camera angles including close ups, far aways, and high angles. I will use images of fashion items and niche places to travel. How and why I will construct representations of individuals, groups, events etc: How I will target the intended audience: Explorer- find a new, niche product o promote, maybe a health care product, a new secret place for a holiday destination or a new fashion trend. Age group- has to appealing to mums, look for an easier life. How the production will stay relevant to the industry context: It is for an independent magazine, so i will ...

magazine coursework

Magazine Task 1- Create a front cover, article and contents page (for more detail see the sheet). It needs to be an independent publishing organisation targeting 30-49 year olds, mostly explorers or reformers. I'm going to do a women fashion magazine targeting a niche audience of cultured older women. An explorer is driven buy the need for discovery, so they respond to brands that offer new sensations whereas a reformer won't buy something just because its new as they are intellectually and socially aware, so they crave authenticity.              Front Cover The front cover must include the following features as a minimum; an original title, mashed, strapline, a cover price and bar code, a main original cover image and at least four cover lines. I intend to use Neve as a model, wearing something business like, and will photograph the top half of her body. I will call the magazine 'Rose' and will include cover lines in small writing...

Magazine Cover  The masthead suggests that this is an independent magazine that differs from the usual magazines that are aimed at women. The masthead is simplistic and takes up are larger section of the page than a stereotypical magazine aimed at women. In addition to this, the image is also simplistic, featuring a female fighter, which isn't what you would usually see on a magazine cover. This shows the magazine is gong against gender norms. There is only one story featured, reinforcing that it is a serious magazine that tackles global issues. The colour tones are minimalist and basic, made up of neutral tones like black, brown, green and blue. This shows the magazine focuses on social change as the colour scheme differs from other magazines aimed at women, which tend to be brighter. This cover is located in the great outdoors on a mountain, which puts the featured woman in a position of power as she is up high. Being outdoors emphasises the magazines need for social change,...

Womans realm analysis

Image
Applying the theories/connotations/denotations The woman featured is presented to be a shy person, which is portrayed through how she is posing with her hand across her face, smiling at the camera. She is fully covered in clothing, and we can only see the top half of her body, which keeps in with the ideology that a woman in the sixties needs to be pure, not provocative. This magazine was produced at a time of a patriarchal society, so produces an ideology where women were expected to be nothing more than housewives, from the perspective of a man. The words featured are all associated with being a good housewife, as women were meant to look after their husbands and children. Their husbands were the dominant figures as women had little financial or sexual independence. Van Zoonen believes that we get our ideas about what it is to be male or female from the media, so therefore women are taught how to be good housewives, so are objectified in the media. However, this changed in the la...

Sixties Timeline

1959-1971 1959- Women in Nepal are allowed to vote, whereas the Swiss people vote against allowing women to vote. This change is the result of British woman fighting for their vote. 1960- Many lower class people started to move up through the class systems by going to university and getting jobs that middle class people would get. 1961- The contraceptive pill is introduced, but is available for married women only. It suppresses women's fertility by using the hormones oestrogen or progestogen, or both. The flaw was that single women were getting their married friends to purchase it for them. It was women's sexual liberation. 1962- Marilyn Munroe died, a hollywood star and an icon to most women, particularly because she was a size 12/14. 1963- George Best, a famous footballer for Manchester United started to influence the public, particularly men, in regards to fashion sense and hairstyles. Many celebrities started to be used in advertising campaigns to influence the pu...

Analysing the mirror

On the front cover, the reader is instantly attracted to this article about the oscars, as it is featured at the top of the page, and viewers tend to read in the 'z' order. It is a soft news story, and is more likely to appeal to a female audience or younger audiences who are socially aware of mainstream events and enjoy the glitz and glamour of it. The glamour of this event can be a form of escapes  for struggler audiences. There is a small article reporting about the weather, but they have included a picture of a woman in a bikini, to appeal to the male gaze. This is because this newspaper can attract males, usually 25+, so this article would encourage them to pick it up.  This newspaper is left wing, so supports Corbyn and the labour party. This means they present Corbyn in a positive way, and May in a negative light (this can be seen when her brexit plan is referred to as 'botched'). This means the newspaper would appeal to younger, working class audience...
